First Group Critique

Our first critique I found to be very successful. All of the critiques I have ever had before were with students that I shared the same classes with and therefore the same concentration with. With being used to seeing artwork of the same medium all the time, having a critique with peers who are pursuing other concentrations was really interesting and new. I was particularly interested in how vocal all of the students were in describing the positive attributes associated with the works which helped to prolong each individual crit, so much that we went passed our allotted 10 minutes each. I was surprised by how vocal I was myself in sharing my opinion on the other student’s works especially those whose work that was something other than photography. I think I tend to shy away from contributing to a conversation about work within another medium because I feel I might be wrong in my expression or opinion of it but every opinion I feel was really helpful to the student whose work was being reviewed regardless if you were making work within that medium or not. For the critique of my own work, I found the comments made by others to be extremely helpful and I learned how to possibly further my work in a direction I had not thought of. Overall, seeing work in the form of sculpture and video and design as opposed to strictly photography in a critique was a new experience that worked out better than I had expected. I found myself to be much more open with my thoughts about works in other mediums and open to the thoughts by others on my own work.
